Trent sat, then pulled Lana down next to him. The warmth of her body eased the coldness that seeped into him whenever he had to deal with his old man. Her rigid posture told him she still didn’t trust him. And could he blame her?
How much to tell her? He had to gain back her trust if there was any way for them to move on and do the right thing for his niece. She would need to be prepared for the force of his father’s influence.
He had no doubt his father would be pulling out all the stops now that he knew the conditions of Michael’s will. Would she even understand what his father was like when it came to the family company? Of course it was more of an empire now. He had to give that to his father. The man had taken the small-time oil company his mother had inherited and made a multi-billion-dollar business out of it.
But how did he explain the dysfunction his father’s obsession with the company had caused? He would have to start at the beginning. Digging into his past would be painful, but he had to make her understand what she was up against. What the two of them were up against.
“My parents came from totally different backgrounds. My mother was an only child and, while my grandparents weren’t nearly as successful as my father has been with the oil company my Grandfather Lord started, she was well provided for. She went to all the right schools and had everything she wanted.”
He felt Lana relax against him and some of the tension in his own body eased. Maybe he would be able to win her trust back. Maybe she would realize he hadn’t had any choice other than to try to protect his niece.
“But my dad was a different story. Grandpa Montgomery worked for Grandfather Lord out on the ranch. He worked hard, and he had a wife and four kids. From what I’ve been told, my dad grew up helping his dad out with ranch chores,” he said.
“So your parents grew up together?” Lana asked.
She was so close now that he could feel the vibration when she spoke. It was nice. He wasn’t a man usually comfortable with someone in his personal space, but this felt good. Safe.
“Yeah, they did. Eventually they grew up, and I guess they fell in love and married.”
“You guess?” she asked.
“I don’t know. I think they loved each other at first. I do remember some times when I was young when they seemed happy together, but in the end all I remember is their fighting.”
And his mother crying. He remembered his mother crying and his dad storming out of the house.
“My uncle has told me that my father buried himself in the business because he needed to prove to himself and the company that he could handle it.”
“It couldn’t have been easy for him to come into the company that way,” said Lana.
“No—knowing where
